Ramps for senior dogs getting into SUVs: measure before buying

A ramp should make access steadier, not introduce a steep, slippery obstacle.

Start with your dog’s movement

If getting into the car has become difficult, discuss changes with your veterinarian. A ramp can support access but does not diagnose or treat pain. Consider your dog’s confidence, size, and ability to use the chosen surface.

Compare folding and telescoping designs

Check the usable length and width, stated weight capacity, grip surface, attachment instructions, and the space needed behind the SUV. A compact folded product can still be too short to create a manageable slope at your vehicle’s height.

Stability beats convenience

Compare how the ramp rests on the vehicle and ground. Follow the manufacturer’s securing instructions and inspect for movement before use. Check traction when wet and whether edges or hinges present hazards. Do not exceed the stated load limit.

Introduce the ramp gradually

Begin with calm practice as recommended by the manufacturer, without forcing a hesitant dog. Supervise use and avoid an unstable or steep setup. Compare storage weight, cleaning, replacement grip surfaces, and return terms before choosing.
